Tribal lands hold enormous potential to deliver low-cost energy to the nation in a time of surging electricity demand — about 6.5% of the nation’s renewable energy resources are on Tribal lands, enough to power millions of American homes. But decades of underinvestment in grid infrastructure has become an absolute barrier to Tribes being able to develop their energy resources and has stifled economic development.
That’s why the Oceti Sakowin Power Authority is working to scale up wind generation and build the transmission to deliver low-cost power where it’s needed most — from the Midwest to the West Coast. Access to financing remains our greatest challenge and the federal government can play a key role in securing the capital needed for large-scale infrastructure development. We’re ready to be partners in building America’s energy future. What we need now is investment, transmission, and collaboration to make it happen.
